Present Past is a dynamic approach to a rephotographic survey.

The City of Toronto has gone through many changes over the years. Certain buildings have stood the test of time and are dwarfed by the towers that surround them. Others have disappeared altogether. This series includes both to show the ever-changing face of the City of Toronto.

Vintage images from the Toronto Archives are merged with modern day images.

Armoury on University Avenue  March 1961 vs 2017

Built in 1891, the Armouries opened on May 17th 1894. The Federal Government ordered armories to be built across Canada for military training. The largest in all of Canada was the one that stood on University Ave in Toronto.

This facility was used to train troops that fought in the Boer War, WWI, WWII and the Korean Conflict. The drill hall also hosted banquets, auto, trade and fashion shows.

In the 1950’s demand for space to expand the courts of Osgoode Hall took precedence. As a result the Armouries were demolished in 1963. Military activities were transferred to the new location on Fleet St.
