Present Past is a dynamic approach to a rephotographic survey.

The City of Toronto has gone through many changes over the years. Certain buildings have stood the test of time and are dwarfed by the towers that surround them. Others have disappeared altogether. This series includes both to show the ever-changing face of the City of Toronto.

Vintage images from the Toronto Archives are merged with modern day images.

Northwest corner of Wellington St W & Church St  1950 vs 2020

Originally opening its doors in 1856 at 78 Church St, The Bank of Toronto then relocated to Wellington and Church by 1862. The concentration of financial activity shifted to King and Bay streets thus in 1901 plans for a new headquarters began.

The design of the new headquarters was charged to the architectural firm of Carrere and Hastings along with Eustace G. Bird. Construction began in 1912 and in 1913 the relocation was complete.

The Bank of Toronto and the Dominion Bank amalgamated in 1955 to form the Toronto Dominion Bank. By 1965 the old Bank of Toronto Building was demolished to make way for the new TD Centre.
