Maple Leaf Stadium, Fleet & Bathurst Sts 1929 vs 2018
Maple Leaf Stadium was built on land acquired in 1925 at the foot of Bathurst and Lakeshore Blvd. The stadium was financed by the team with an initial budget of $300,000 which ballooned to $750,000 by completion.
Opening day was April 29, 1926. Games were only played during the day until 1934 when lighting was installed. The stadium saw a surge in attendance during the 50’s after the Leafs were sold to Jack Kent Cooke.
The 60’s brought about change. Cooke had tried to convince city council that a new stadium was needed. Considering the cost to taxpayers, they thought otherwise. The team was sold in 1964 and again in 1967 which would send the team to Louisville, Kentucky. The last game was played on September 4, 1967. Deemed to be a hazard, a few months later the stadium was demolished.
