Present Past is a dynamic approach to a rephotographic survey.

The City of Toronto has gone through many changes over the years. Certain buildings have stood the test of time and are dwarfed by the towers that surround them. Others have disappeared altogether. This series includes both to show the ever-changing face of the City of Toronto.

Vintage images from the Toronto Archives are merged with modern day images.

Bay St at Queen St west  1963 vs 2018

The President’s Conference Committee (PCC) streetcar entered into service in Toronto on September 23rd, 1938. To me this was the first Red Rocket, with burgundy red and cream exterior colours. As a kid I remember the metal tags next to each window “Keep arm in”. You would have to check each window to find one where the clips worked. Many times when the streetcar would suddenly stop the open windows would slam shut

In 1995 when the PCC streetcars went out of service, they were replaced by a larger  model. The weight difference caused many problems for older businesses located on streetcar routes. The rumbling would cause older single pane windows to crack and shatter.  This affected many businesses.
