Present Past is a dynamic approach to a rephotographic survey.

The City of Toronto has gone through many changes over the years. Certain buildings have stood the test of time and are dwarfed by the towers that surround them. Others have disappeared altogether. This series includes both to show the ever-changing face of the City of Toronto.

Vintage images from the Toronto Archives are merged with modern day images.

Looking south on Bay St at Queen St W  1928 vs 2017

Bay Street was originally named Bear Street due to frequent bear sightings. It was later renamed in 1797. It connected Lot Street (present day Queen Street West) to a bay in Toronto Harbour.

The section of Bay St running north of Queen Street West was known as Terauley Street. Named after the Terauley Estate near Bay and Queen Streets. In 1922 by-laws were enacted to connect several streets to extend Bay Street to Scollard. By 1924, Bay was connected to Davenport by implementing By-law 9884 for the name change.
