Present Past is a dynamic approach to a rephotographic survey.
The City of Toronto has gone through many changes over the years. Certain buildings have stood the test of time and are dwarfed by the towers that surround them. Others have disappeared altogether. This series includes both to show the ever-changing face of the City of Toronto.
Vintage images from the Toronto Archives are merged with modern day images.
Southwest corner Bloor & Yonge Streets Dec 11, 1923 vs 2019
In 1901 Frank Stollery borrowed $1000 from his father to open a haberdashery on Yonge just south of Bloor. Eventually the store would relocate to the southwest corner. With the widening of Bloor St changes had to be made. The adjacent property was purchased and then a new building was built. By 1931 the new structure would open.
Upon retiring in 1968 Frank Stollery sold his business to his son and a silent partner. Years later in the 2010’s the property’s value was exorbitant and as a result it was sold to a developer. News of a historical designation in the works the developer ordered the demolition. The building was demolished over a weekend. Another historical structure was gone.
