Old & New City Hall, Queen St W  1975 vs 2017

After 11 years of construction Old City Hall was completed in 1899. An original budget of $600,000 ballooned to $2.5 million. Once constructed it was the largest structure in Toronto.

Upon completion of Toronto’s fourth City Hall in 1965, Old City Hall was under threat. Original plans for the development of the Eaton Centre called for its demolition. Making way to provide more shopping space, offices and towers.  As a result, the “Friends of Old City Hall” brought together community activists and concerned citizens to save the landmark.    In 1989, The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada declared Old City Hall as a National Historic Site.
