University Theatre, Bloor St West August 1983 vs 2017
The University Theatre opened its doors in 1949. Matinee tickets were 75 cents and evenings were $1.20. “Joan of Arc” starring Ingrid Bergman was the film on opening day.
The 80’s saw A drastic decline in moviegoers. Operating the University became uneconomical. The property was put up for sale and the doors were locked for good in 1986.
Anyone who grew up in Toronto during the late 70’s early 80’s knew the University Theatre. One of the great theatres to see the original Star Wars Trilogy. Double-bills of Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back drew lines that wrapped around the theatre to Cumberland.
