Distant view of Duomo from Piazzale Michelangelo.

The Piazza del Duomo is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Giotto's Bell Tower.

Work began on the cathedral in 1296 under the direction of architect Arnolfo di Cambio. The entire construction took approximately 150 years to complete, being consecrated in 1436.

The cathedral is the 3rd largest in the world, after St. Peter's in Rome and St Paul's in London. It was dedicated to the Virgin of the flower in 1412.
