Constructed by architect Bartolomeo Ammannati from 1567 to 1569 the Ponte Santa Trinita ( Holy Trinity Bridge ) spans the Arno river just west of Ponte Vecchio. The bridge is the oldest elliptic arch bridge in the world.

The original wood bridge built in 1252 on this site was washed away by a flood. The bridge was rebuilt several times, the final time being after it was destroyed by retreating German troops in 1944. The reconstruction was done with original stonework retrieved from the Arno and replaced pieces were created from the original quarry.
